I’m not exactly the artistic type. A lot of people have said the opposite of me just because I like to crochet, sew, knit, and decorate cakes. Oh yeah, and I’m a musician. Why is it that people always think you’re right brained if you’re a musician?

I am DEFINITELY not artistic, people! Like, the I only can draw stick people, stick grass, and stick trees kind of artist LOL! For real!

So when I got a wild hair up in the southern region of my Irish self and thought, “Why can’t I just cut my family’s hair?”, I totally went for it. I started with my husband, because … well, he could get away with not having any hair and having to be shaved bald if I totally messed it up! Besides, using electric clippers is a snap. Or should I say, buzz! hee hee hee

I use electric shears for husband

As my confidence bolstered from my talent of not needing to shave Man Cub bald, I graduated to one of my daughters. The youngest one. Because she was too young to care anyway if I gave her a hack job. Right? Oh, if only our kids knew all the things. 😉

With all that said, it shouldn’t be necessary to mention that I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL HAIR STYLIST. But I said it anyway. Consider it my disclaimer. This is how I cut our hair and has worked well for us.

Necessary Tools To Cut Hair

Always use professional scissors specifically for hair cutting

When cutting hair, it’s super important to have actual hair shears. I know this because my grandfather, a babur by trade, made sure I knew this. And thus provided me with a professional pair almost two decades ago. Thanks, Pop!

Upon trying to find a comparable pair of professional hair shears online, I discovered that the ones I own are apparently vintage. They are stainless steel Nu Kut by Salpac Co. So I found a different pair of shears online that should suffice, or you could go to your local beauty supply store.

Steps to Cut Hair

My girls’ hair range from medium – long lengths. These are the steps I use to trim/cut their hair a few times a year. More like whenever it gets so bad that they are actually the ones who come to me and say, “Mom, I need a trim.” 😉

  1. Using a fine-tooth comb, part the hair from behind ear to ear and over the top of the head.
  2. Divide the remainder of the hair hanging down in 1-inch sections from ear to ear, clipping each section up out of the way.
  3. Starting with the bottom section, divide it in half and work on one half at a time. Run the comb through a section of hair, holding the hair between your index and middle fingers. Follow down toward the bottom and cut desired length off. Repeat until both bottom section halves are complete.
  4. Let down the next section and repeat step 3 above. Cut to match length of underside sections.
  5. Repeat for all the sections except the very top one.
  6. Let down the top section and part in the middle to create side sections. Take about an inch of the side section you start on and clip the rest up out of the way, like previously. Cut to match underside length.
  7. Repeat in one inch sections until done for each side.
