Simple Frugal Facial Moisturizer with SPF

With just a few ingredients, you can make your own simple frugal facial moisturizer with SPF. I show you how I make mine with ingredients that are healthy for your skin and protect it from the sun, too!

simple daily moisturizer with SPF

See that beautiful blue bottle? That’s where I keep my simple frugal moisturizer with SPF. I’ve been making this daily moisturizer with sunscreen for several years now. It started with a visit (for the first time) to my dermatologist. She cut a few spots of basal cell off my face. I’m a fair-skinned lady. Freckles have sprinkled my skin since I can remember. I also grew up in the 80s. You know, the age of “let’s bathe ourselves in oil, lay in the sun, and see how dark our skin can be”? I was just a kid and sunscreen was a bother. Now I smother my children in it. They whine and complain, but I just tell them they’re welcome (in a sing-song manner like Maui off of “Moana”, of course), and that they’ll thank me when they’re older.

As a result of needles and scalpels on my face, I quickly turned to natural remedies to protect my skin. I did some research and found what would work best for my type of skin, which is usually normal, or normal to dry. This article was super helpful.

Of course, I looked for ways to make it myself. That’s what I do (an example: my own tooth powder). Gotta work it into my budget somehow, and I’ve found the best way to do that is DIY, baby.

What I use

For the base oil, I usually use whatever I have on hand. Anything from avocado oil, jojoba, almond, to argan. Today I had argan oil that I had left over from another DIY I made. I’ve used all the above mentioned before and love them all. For the SPF factor I use carrot seed oil and it’s essential oil. Because it makes me feel extra protected from the sun. I could leave out the carrot seed essential oil, but I have it and so I use it. When I run out, I can just rely on the actual seed oil by itself. Here’s a great article all about carrot seed oil.

Because carrot seed oil is very pungent, I like to use an extra essential oil to make the moisturizer smell amazing and it also is nourishing to the skin. Win win! Lavender is my favorite. I’ve also used Frankincense, too.

Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil is very nourishing for the skin, especially for us ladies in the aging category. Sea Buckthorn is also great for relieving inflammation and healing rosacea, acne, free-radical damage, and inflammation on the skin. Source

Here’s what you need

  • Base oil – for normal skin I use this Argan Oil; or Jojoba Oil (I have purchased from Trader Joe’s in the past); also this Almond Oil; I buy my avocado oil from Costco. Bonus – avocado oil has an SPF of 4-15. Sometimes I’ll combine my base oils, especially when I find that I only have a little bit and not enough to make a whole 2 oz bottle.
  • Carrot Seed Oil – for sun protection
  • Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil – because of hormones and aging. Need I say more?
  • Lavender Essential Oil – because I love it. I now purchase all my essential oils through Rocky Mountain Oils. I have used Young Living in the past. Because Rocky Mountain is the same quality without the middleman (no MLM), thus being cheaper, I have switched. I’m always looking for the budget-friendly option!

Putting it all together

  • Using a glass bottle (I use these), fill two-thirds the way with your chosen base oil
  • Add carrot seed oil to about the three-fourths mark
  • Fill to the base of the neck of the bottle with Sea Buckthorn
  • Add your preferred essential oils. I add 30 drops of carrot seed essential oil; 4-6 drops of Lavender. When customizing with essential oils (besides carrot seed essential oil), use no more than 4-7 drops.
  • Tighten the dropper lid and shake to mix well
  • Apply to face and neck with fingers, using about a dime-sized amount
