Homemade Facial Powder | From Your Pantry!
This homemade facial powder recipe provides an all natural DIY to your makeup routine that costs pocket change to make and found in your pantry. Oh, glorious day!
Do you like paying the high prices for organic makeup? I don’t! But I hate toxic chemicals on my skin even more, so I’ve had to sacrifice in the past. In other words, I went without.
When I was younger, facial powder wasn’t a high priority or necessity. Young skin — hello! You know what I’m talking about, right?
Well, here I am. Four kids later. Decades later. Wrinkles and grey “wisdom” hairs later. Now I’m SO ready to wear some powder again. I just like the way it gives me a finished look somehow. Could just be my eyes. Failing. Ya know, the decades later thing and all.
I love this recipe because it’s super simple. Straight to the point. AND … super cheap. All the things that give me all the feels.

Homemade Facial Powder —Comparison
Let’s take a look at what a common, drugstore brand of facial powder contains, shall we? Yes, let’s!
Talc, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Calcium Silicate (Anticaking Agent), Zinc Stearate, Fragrance (Parfum), Dimethicone, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Camphor, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Menthol, Isopropyl Myristate, Propylparaben, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Oil, Methylparaben, Quaternium 15, BHT, Mica, Iron Oxides, May Contain ( /-):, Ultramarines
Ok, so some of those ingredients I actually know what they are. Others, not so much.
Upon a quick search on the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database site, it’s blatantly obvious that some of these ingredients found in this drugstore-brand facial powder are major offenders to my health. Thus the reason to switch it out for a homemade facial powder!
What to buy if you’re not into making a homemade facial powder
I would start with products from trusted stores near you that you may already shop; for example, Whole Foods or New Seasons grocery stores. They sell natural and organic cosmetics brands, like Mineral Fusion and Pacifica, to name a few.
I do like a frugal, DIY option when possible (HERE you can find my other personal product tutorials). However, a brand that I’ve recently come across this past year is 100% Pure. This is the brand I currently use and buy for the products that are too tedious for me to make myself. I have been so pleased with their quality and choices. Putting on mascara is such a pleasing experience when the smell of fruit dances in the air! (This is my unsolicited opinion. I am not currently sponsored or have an affiliate with them.)
Homemade facial powder — Ingredients in your pantry!
To make your homemade facial powder, you need:
- 1/4 cup organic arrowroot flour — you can also use non-GMO, organic cornstarch if you don’t have corn sensitivities
- 2 TBS cacao, or cocoa powder — Costco carries it seasonally at a great price
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp bentonite clay
- 2 tsp zinc oxide*** — optional, for spf of about 20. This is the first time trying this. I feel that I need all the protection I can get! Use a spice/coffee grinder to blend the zinc into the powder well.
This is the recipe and amounts of each ingredient I use for my tone of skin. I am a fair-skinned, freckled cutie. Cutie — kinda like the short, plump citrus fruit. Hee hee, snort snort
These measurements are a good place to start. If using zinc oxide, use a coffee or spice grinder to blend the zinc well with all the other ingredients.
***Always use a non-nano, uncoated, and not micronized zinc oxide. When mixing this into your homemade facial powder, do not inhale any powder. Wear a mask, or simply hold your shirt over your nose and mouth like I do. Use a coffee grinder to blend the zinc with the rest of the ingredients; otherwise you’ll end up with teeny tiny zinc clumps. Once the powder is all mixed together, the zinc binds together with the other ingredients, and you don’t have to worry about breathing it in any longer.
Make It
Simply combine all your ingredients, one at a time, stirring completely with each addition, into a 4 oz glass jar. Adjust to find the right tone for your skin. Play around with the different spices and cacao to find what matches your skin. Test for matching skin color on your hand. You’re done! Apply with dedicated makeup brush.
