This rustic apple pie granola recipe is perfect for crisp mornings. Soaked with sourdough for healthy digestion, and spiced with the flavors from an apple orchard. Breakfast is served!

Rustic Apple Pie Granola harvest fall simple healthy

Leaves falling. Refreshing chill in the air. Frost dancing on the grass blades. Fog blanketing the valleys. School children learning. Time for orchard flavors, like those found in this rustic apple pie granola recipe.

These are a few of my favorite things about the autumn season. And the best part of it all, my man cub always brings me a hot cup of coffee, french-pressed with care.

Another great thing is knowing that breakfast is waiting in the pantry. A healthy, soaked and fermented granola is a great way to start the day, and easy for kids to grab on their own. They have the choice to eat it with our homemade yogurt and topped with some fruit, or maybe served with some milk, hot or cold.

The Flavors of Rustic Apple Pie Granola

Making your own cereal like this granola is such an easy, frugal thing you can do. And it’s healthy because you control the ingredients!

It’s easy to flavor granola with dried fruit, spices, sourdough, and sauces. Then there’s the many options of add-ins to boost flavor and nutrition. Another example is my Pumpkin Spice Soaked Granola.

This granola is flavored with cinnamon and some home-canned applesauce I still had sitting on my shelf. The smell is amazing as it starts to dehydrate and get toasty!

Granola Add-In Ideas

When it comes to homemade granola, boost it with healthy add-ins to make your breakfast or snack a powerhouse of nutrition and fuel. Here’s a few ideas to get you started:

  • Coconut shreds, unsweetened
  • Flax meal or seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Nuts — walnuts or pecans pair nicely with this fall-inspired apple pie granola
  • Maca powder
  • Collagen powder
  • Pumpkin seeds

This is just the beginning. Let your creative juices flow when you mix up a batch of homemade granola! The beauty is that you can tailor it to your family’s preferences.

I mostly follow a THM lifestyle, so I usually tailor my granolas to be an E meal. You can read more about that here if you’re new to the Trim Healthy Mama way, or check out one of their books at your library. A good book to start with is Trim Healthy Table because it gives a great summary of the whole plan at the beginning of the book and then goes into the recipes.

Rustic Apple Pie Granola Ingredients

12 cups rolled oats

2-3 cups walnuts, chopped or crushed by hand

2 TBL cinnamon

1/2 TBL nutmeg, or to preference

3/4 tsp cardamom or ginger

1/2 TBL himalayan salt, or sea salt

1 cup sourdough starter, doesn’t need to be active

1 quart jar unsweetened applesauce

Water, optional

Instructions

  1. Combine all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add wet ingredients and mix well. If the mixture seems a little dry, add water 1/2 cup at a time until all the oats are thoroughly moistened. You want them wet enough to get the soaking action happening, but it’s not necessary to have them sloppy. If you add too much water, no worries. It just means more dehydrating time. 😉
  3. Cover granola with a tea towel and let set for at least 6 hours, or overnight.
  4. After the soaking time, spread granola out on dehydrator sheets, or on a rimmed cookie sheet for the oven.
  5. Dehydrate at 125º F 6 to 8 hours, or on the lowest setting of your oven until dry. This will depend on how moist your granola is. If using the oven, check every 45 min and stir to prevent burning. I try to time my granola making to dehydrate first thing in the morning or overnight. Hands-free, hassle-free cooking!
  6. Cool granola completely before storing in containers. I like to use glass jars like this one with these lids.
