Rustic Crocheted Ornaments

Here’s two simple patterns for rustic crocheted ornaments. It’s always a classic look when decorations are kept neutral and inspired by nature!

The simplicity of these rustic crocheted ornaments are the perfect compliment to a natural themed tree. I can’t get over how beautiful the country look of jute and cream cotton look. Makes my heart swoon!

I would SO keep my tree to this simplicity, sparkled with classic white lights. But alas! I live with children, or children at heart anyway, and they P.R.O.T.E.S.T. every year I try to mature into a more simplistic, homestead-type of tree. Nope, no way, no how! They want their multi-colored lights with every sentimental ornament since their dawn of time to be strung around that beautiful evergreen. Sighhhhhh. I guess I can deal a few more years. I’m sure I’ll be a puddle when at last I can decorate the tree the way I want. And I’ll be wishing for the wonder years back again.

Rustic Crocheted Ornaments

Supplies

I love the look of jute! And cotton. The two different textures compliment each other so well.

3-ply Jute twine: this is similar to the one I ordered from Amazon, but you can get it at any craft store or WalMart.

Cotton yarn: this is the one I use. I like to keep it in bulk because I use it for various projects throughout the year!

Crochet hook: size G6 or I9. I use both to produce various sizes. Basic starter sets can be ordered online or purchased at various craft stores.

Crochet needle: easily found at JoAnns, WalMart, craft stores. Or order from Amazon.

Scissors

Finished Size

Star—roughly 3.5″-4.5″ across, depending on hook size

Snowflake—approx. 4″-4.5″ across, depending on hook size

Key

• st = stitch
• sl st = slip stitch
• ch = chain
• mr = magic ring
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• tr = triple (or treble) crochet
• ch-sp = chain space
• sk = skip
• beg = beginning
• *to = repeat from * to end of instruction
• [ ] work instructions between brackets as many times stated

How To Rustic Crocheted Ornaments—Star Pattern

Round 1: Using a magic ring, ch 2, 10 hdc in mr. Join to first dc.

Round 2 (star points): *[ch 5, sc in second stitch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in last ch, skip 1 dc, slip stitch to the next], repeat from * 4 more times to make the 5 points of the star, finish off and weave in ends.

Tie a piece of jute loop to the top of one point to hang the ornament.

Note: Your finished star will look somewhat like a starfish. To make it stiff and hold a star shape, simply spritz lightly with water and briefly iron on medium setting. You could also block if desired, but I don’t like to take the extra time. Always in a hurry it seems lol!

How To Rustic Crocheted Ornaments—Snowflake Pattern

Round 1: Using a magic ring, ch 3, 2 dc into the ring, [ch 4, 3 dc into the ring] 4 times, ch 4, sl st to top of first ch 3. (5 total sets of 3dc including beg ch 3)

Round 2: sl st until next ch-sp, ch 1, sc in the same ch-sp, * (ch 4, sc, ch 8, sc, ch 4, sc) in the same ch-sp, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sc in next ch-sp; repeat from * around. After crocheting last ch 3, sl st to first st. (10 total clusters of ch 4 loops and 5 total ch 8 loops)

Fasten off. Leave the yarn tail if you want to hang it or weave the end and attach a piece of jute to hang like I did. I like the rustic look!

Note: You can make smaller snowflakes by adjusting the amount of ch clusters in Round 2. Instead of ch 4 and ch 8, you could adjust to ch 3 and ch 6, or ch 2 and ch 4. Want bigger snowflakes? Adjust accordingly. Just keep the smaller amount of ch to half the size of the longer ch, i.e. ch 5, sc, ch 10, sc, ch 5, sc), etc. Make sense? I hope so!
