Keep It Simple, Sister!

The ingredients are just three. Yep. I’m all about simplicity, with a little signature thrown in when the mood strikes.

If I’m going to make a life change, like replacing common household or everyday-use items, then it has to be practical and something I can manage without hassle, stress, or fuss.

hard lotion and lip balm

The basics are a solid butter fat (shea, cocoa, or mango), coconut oil, and beeswax. Throw in some essential oils for signature, if the mood strikes. It adds some various benefits depending on the essential oil used, as well as scent. Let’s be real: it’s all about the scent for us ladies. Some prefer no scent; others miss their bath and body-type stores (hand raised here!).

Instructions

  1. Place a designated quart mason jar or pyrex measuring cup in a medium pot and fill the pot halfway with water. Bring to a low simmer on the stove.
  2. Measure out the shea butter and coconut oil and add to the jar.
  3. Using a kitchen scale, weigh out 3 oz. beeswax and add to jar.
  4. Heat through until all ingredients are melted.
  5. Remove from heat, let rest a minute, then add 30-45 drops of essential oils, if desired.
  6. Carefully fill lip balm tubes and silicone molds as desired. Once completely cooled, store hard lotion bars in old containers (think Altoids), a sealed mason jar for shelf storage, or wrapped in some parchment paper for gifts!

Notes

This batch will make approximately 9 oz. I made 7 lip balms and 7 small bars.

If you live in a warmer climate, you may want to add a bit more beeswax to make a stiffer product. Add a tablespoon at a time during the melting process. Test by dripping a few drops on some parchment or wax paper. Once cooled test how easily it melts when applied to skin or lips.

Paper towels make clean up really easy. I simply wipe out my designated quart mason jar, store it in my and it’s ready to use for next time.
