how to knit a simple dishcloth farmhouse style

I love to knit this simple farmhouse dishcloth. It works up quick, especially the more you make. When I use these dishcloths to wash dishes or clean up around my kitchen, somehow they make the chore a little more pleasurable. Knowing that I created something that serves a purpose in my home gives me great joy.

Not only does this dishcloth bring me joy each time I use it, but it also comes with the gift of simplicity, time well-spent, and relaxation. Think about it: when you carve out time to sit and create something with your hands, you’re taking the time to rest your body. There’s much pleasure to be had in my favorite chair, warmed by the heat of a wood stove, and a hot mug of nourishing goodness. The fall and winter months are the perfect time for this!

Bonus: these make GREAT gifts. I’m thinking gift baskets for Mother’s Day, birthdays, Christmas, weddings.

Let’s get started. Grab a mug of your favorite nourishment and knit along with me!

If you’re brand new to knitting, welcome to the club! Here are a few videos I’ve found helpful in my knitting journey:

How to knit and purl, continental style

A video on how to knit on cast-on method

How to bind off

Instructions

Cast on knit 36 sts. (I demonstrate this in my video. Also see video link above.) This is customizable: add/decrease stitches in increments of two to desired width.

Work 8 rows in garter st. Remember to slip the first st and purl the last st of every row.

1st Stockinette Accent

Work 6 rows in St st, ending with a WS, or purl row.

Main Body

Work in garter st until desired measurement of dishcloth is reached. For this cloth I worked about 8 inches from cast on.

2nd Stockinette Accent

As in the first accent, work 6 rows in St st, ending with a WS purl row.

Work 9 rows in garter st.

Bind off all sts and weave in ends.

Now, how satisfying does it feel to have made yourself a dishcloth? Once you’ve made a few, they work up fast. You’ll be knitting up a whole basket of them in no time, gifting them out left and right. Beam with pride, my friend, because handmade gifts are extra special. In fact, they’re my favorite kind!
